Most moms tell me the hardest part about taking family portraits is coordinating outfits that are comfortable and look great on camera. Let me relieve that pressure, mommas! I’ve created a guide that explains what to wear for fall family photos, no matter your style and budget. We’re going to cover:
- The most flattering color palettes for fall family photos
- How to mix things up and coordinate outfits like a rockstar
- Where to shop for heirloom quality pieces that won’t break the bank
So let’s dive in!
What to wear for fall family photos
Warm & Cozy Neutrals
A warm and neutral color palette works for all season, complexions and personal styles. Note the cozy cottage aesthetic here, coming from sweet floral patterns and natural striped linen. To add a little dimension to a light and neutral palette, you may want to add in a soft pattern that isn’t overbearing, like this gorgeous option from Bohme. Pair with soft knits and natural elements like leather shoes, and you’ve got a wardrobe that is effortlessly stylish and authentic!
Cool Neutrals
Hoping to have some more color in your images? Sage, fawn and French blue are fabulous choices if you’d like to add a hint of color, without being too trendy. Opt for softer versions of these hues and pair with sweet details like lace, knit and tiny prints. Pro tip: choose one color to pair with the neutrals and sprinkle it throughout the outfits sparingly, to create balance and interest! Some boutiques offer a “similar styles” option for building family outfits.
Whites & Light Neutrals
This color palette is evergreen, and for a good reason! Whites, creams and natural linen colors work for all types of styles and locations. The key to a successful light and white palette is to mix up textures and add a pattern in there, too. My personal favorites that look (and feel) amazing are linen, gauze, knit and cotton voile. These fabrics are comfortable and flow beautifully during movement shots, too! You can never go wrong with white, so if this resonates with your dream session that feels bright and airy, then this color palette may be just for you!
