There’s something about motherhood and the ocean—both wild and rhythmic, both full of new life. As a Virginia Beach maternity photographer, I get to capture the beauty of that connection in one of the most peaceful and inspiring places on the East Coast.

This post isn’t just a gallery of pretty pictures (though I’ll share plenty!). It’s a behind-the-scenes look at one of my favorite maternity sessions at Croatan Beach, plus helpful tips if you’re dreaming of your own beach maternity session in Virginia Beach. Whether you’re a first-time mom, a seasoned pro with toddlers in tow, or new to the area (like the Hadel family I photographed), my hope is that this post gives you confidence, clarity, and a little spark of excitement for what’s possible.

Why Work with a Virginia Beach Maternity Photographer?

Let’s be honest—there’s no shortage of gorgeous beaches in Virginia. But knowing how to work with the light, the tides, the wind, and a growing belly (or a busy toddler) takes more than a camera. When you hire a local Virginia Beach maternity photographer, you’re getting:

  • Someone who knows the area: which beaches are quiet, where the light hits just right, and when to avoid the crowds.
  • Experience photographing real families in real conditions—not just picture-perfect poses, but honest, connected moments.
  • A calm guide who knows when to prompt, when to let the moment breathe, and how to create images that feel like you.

This isn’t just about photos—it’s about your story, told with warmth, care, and just the right mix of structure and spontaneity.

Why Croatan Beach is One of My Favorite Virginia Beach Photo Locations

Tucked just beyond the bustle of the boardwalk, Croatan Beach offers the perfect blend of beauty and peace for maternity sessions. It’s quieter than the main strip, with wide-open sands, rolling dunes, and an uninterrupted view of the sunset. It gives families the space to move, breathe, and just be.

There’s a softness here—the kind of backdrop that lets love take center stage. Whether you’re chasing your toddler through the surf or standing still with your hands on your belly, Croatan holds it all with quiet grace.

Why Portra 400 Is My Go-To for Virginia Beach Maternity Sessions

In addition to digital, we also incorporated 35mm film into Sandra’s maternity session—a decision I always love for slower, more intentional storytelling. I chose Portra 400, a film stock that handles direct sunlight beautifully and still holds its warmth as the sun dips below the horizon.

Film at the beach has this dreamy softness you just can’t replicate digitally. There’s a richness to the tones, a softness in the skin, and a little magic in the imperfection. Even as we lost the light toward the end of our session, Portra 400 stayed steady—capturing the golden glow on Sandra’s face and the twinkle of mischief in her son’s eyes.

Using film allows me to be more present. It slows the pace, encourages connection, and gives families an heirloom-level gallery that blends timelessness with a hint of nostalgia.

Maternity Session Spotlight: The Hadel Family’s Story

Sandra and her family had just moved from San Diego—military life pulling them across the country to this beautiful little corner of Virginia Beach. With her due date just around the corner, she reached out to schedule a maternity session that felt like a deep breath before the next big chapter.

We met at Croatan on a breezy evening. The sky opened up in pastel blues and warm golds, the kind of light that makes you want to pause and soak it in. Sandra wore a soft, flowing dress that moved with the wind. Her husband and toddler brought the joyful chaos—kisses, giggles, sand-between-the-toes energy.

And as the sun began to slip behind the dunes, we pulled out the film camera and captured a special kind of magic that happens only in the last rays of golden light on the water.

What to Expect During a Maternity Session at the Beach

Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, a maternity session should feel calm, meaningful, and a little magical. When you book with me, here’s how it flows:

  • Planning together: We’ll chat about what to wear, the best time of day, and how to make the session feel true to your family.
  • Golden hour timing: We meet about 60–90 minutes before sunset, when the light is soft and warm. It’s when Croatan Beach is at its most peaceful.
  • Space for connection: I guide gently but never force poses. We’ll let your toddler explore, let you take a breath, and make space for laughter and stillness.

My goal? To create a session that honors this fleeting season of motherhood—documented in a way that feels like you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Let’s answer a few of the most common questions I get from expecting moms:

What’s the best time to schedule a maternity session?
I typically recommend scheduling between 28–34 weeks. You’ll have a gorgeous bump but still feel comfortable moving around. We can still absolutely shoot if you’re comfortable right up until birth!

Can my partner or older kids join?
Absolutely! Some of my favorite images include the whole family—snuggling on a blanket, running through the surf, or cuddling up close as the sun sets. Those familial bonds are what bring the magic and beauty into your portraits.

What should I wear?
Soft fabrics that flow and catch the breeze work beautifully. I offer a custom style consultation and plenty of guidance if you’re unsure what to bring. You can check out my maternity photo dress recommendations here.

What if the weather doesn’t cooperate?
I keep a close eye on the forecast and always build in rain check days. We’ll reschedule if needed to make sure the light and weather are just right!

When will I get my images?
You’ll receive your full gallery of film scans ready in about 2 weeks, depending on film processing times. Then we get started with the fun part–your ordering appointment! This is where we sit down, view your gallery, and select the portraits you wish to display in artwork and albums!
